bluestates::participate
As more people participate in bluestates: exploring relational space, the visualizations of your social networks become richer and more interesting. You can help us! We'd like to get a lot ISEA attendees - and San Jose residents - to participate in the project.
Here's what you can do.
Step One: Make yourself visible to Bluetooth
If you're coming to ISEA 2006 to interact with bluestates: exploring relational space, please make sure that your mobile phone or computer's Bluetooth network is set to "visible" or "discoverable". (There are several other ISEA projects which rely on this, so it's a good idea in general.)
Step Two: Install scanning software on your mobile, PDA or computer
(To learn what this scanning software does, click here)
That's it. Thank you very much, and come by the South Hall to see the results!
Call for participation (issued on 3 August 2006):
bluestates: exploring relational space is an invited project for ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge. The ZeroOne San Jose Festival will transform San Jose into the North American epicenter of art and digital culture from August 7th to the 13th, showcasing the world's most innovative contemporary artists. http://01sj.org
bluestates: exploring relational space harnesses the
invisible-but-pervasive presence of Bluetooth to create maps of "relational"
space - the invisible social life of the city brought to light. Using a far-flung
network of scanners, bluestates: exploring relational space will sense who you're
with, using that information to build a visualization of your social network
while you're at ISEA.
We'd like some help with this: we use a small, lightweight piece of software
- available for computers, mobile phones and PDAs equipped with Bluetooth -
to perform the scans. We will be deploying scanners across downtown San Jose,
and as the number of scanners grows, the better it all works.
So...you wanna be a scanner? If so, just go
here to get started.
If you're an exhibiting artist, we can offer you an even better deal: we'll
install the scanner software (and Bluetooth hardware, if needed) near to your
own installation, on any computer or mobile phone you designate. Why would you
want to do this? As bluestates: exploring relational space
performs its scans, it builds a model of who interacts with your work - you
can see your work in relational space. After ISEA, you'll be able to take that
data and visualize it for yourself - or use our software
(our software is GPL open source) to do it.
So...you wanna be a scanner?
Thanks!
