bluestates::installing BlueStates on your mobile phone or PDA
Before you install BlueStates on your mobile phone or PDA, there's a few things you need to know:
Your mobile phone or PDA must have:
Plenty of mobile phones have Java - for games and such. Newer phones (within the last 36 months) will have J2ME 2.0. JSR-82 support has only been included in milbe phones for the last 18 months (or thereabouts), so if your phone is much older than that, BlueStates may not work.
The newer SonyEriccson and Nokia seem to work fine. Others require
testing.
So please give it a try today, and let us know. (Please
let us know.)

Instructions for using BlueStates on your mobile or PDA:
Step One: Launch BlueStates
When you launch BlueStates, you'll be prompted to allow the application to create a server Bluetooth connection. Answer "Yes" to this prompt - otherwise BlueStates won't work properly. When you click "Yes", you're giving your mobile permission to pass along the data it collects to bluestation programs running on computers throughout the festival area. Only this information is available. There is no security risk to the data on your mobile.
Step Two: Sit back and watch the display
You'll see the display "pulse" as the mobile performs a scan for local Bluetooth devices - these devices are probably within 20 - 50 feet of your mobile. Once the scan is over - it takes about 15 seconds - you'll see a solid blue circle which spans the entire screen; there may be smaller circles inside this of this one, each labled with a name. These are the devices sensed by your mobile during the scan. About once a minute, your mobile will perform another scan - watch the sweep hand move and you'll see how long you have until another scan.
Step Three: Let it run!
As you walk through downtown San Jose, moving from festival area to festival area, BlueStates will scan and sense the crowd around you. Many mobiles will let you "minimize" the application - similar to minimizing a window on a desktop computer. The application will still be running in the background, but you can also make or take calls, send and receive text messages, etc.
Step Four: Select "Exit" to quit BlueStates
If there's scan data on your mobile that hasn't been collected by a friendly bluestation, it will be lost when you exit BlueStates. However, if you have an internet data connection through your mobile phone, you can select the "Send" menu item to use your mobile's data transmission capabilities to send the scan results to us. You do not need to do this - depending on the plan you have with your carrier, it can cost you money. But if you'd care to send us the data, we'd appreciate it. The more data we collect, the better everything works.
We've done our very best to make BlueStates both informative and aesthetically pleasing. Let us know if there are any improvements we should consider.
